Engraved Crystal Cider Pitcher, jug, pot, carafe - France XIXth XXth

About the Item

Engraved crystal cider pitcher, mouth blown and carved on wheel. Can be used as a water or wine pitcher French Work. Late 19th-early 20th century. Crystal is a type of lead-rich glass (containing at least 23% lead oxide by mass). Lead lowers the melting point of glass, while stabilizing its composition. It makes it brighter (“rainbow” effect), denser and gives it a special sound. Furthermore, crystal, which is more "soft" than glass, can be cut more easily. The discovery of crystal took place in England. The production of crystal in France began in the 18th century at the Münzthal glass factory, which would become the famous Saint Louis crystal factory.
