  • Minton Set of 4 Porcelain Plates in Italianate Gilt Frames, a. Boullemier, 1882
    By Minton
    Located in London, GB
On offer is a stunning set of four framed cabinet plates made by Minton in 1882. The plates are painted by the famous porcelain artist Antonin Boullemier and are framed in gilt Italianate Rococo scroll frames with velvet cartouches. Minton was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Ridgway, Coalport and others. They were located in Staffordshire and were known specifically for their wonderfully fine white bone china and bright colours; there is a colour called "Minton Blue" which is a fresh azure blue that was very fashionable during the Victorian era. Throughout the different phases of its existence, the factory made top quality creamware, porcelain, majolica and ultimately the finest parian porcelain. Minton excelled in their decorations and gilt work; these were often executed by artists who came from the Sèvres factory in France and brought their skills with them. The plates were decorated by the famous porcelain artist Antonin Boullemier, who was the son of a Sèvres porcelain decorator and was apprenticed and employed by Sèvres before moving the England in 1881, where he was employed by Minton. For many years he worked exclusively for Minton as one of their most celebrated artists; later on his career he started working freelance from his own studio at home for various factories. Boullemier is known for beautiful portraits, cupids and mythological subjects and both 18th Century and contemporary styles. These plates are decorated with charming scenes of a lady and the set may have been meant as depictions of the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. On the first plate you see a young girl standing in the fields, a vegetable garden with bean stalks in the background. It looks like a very British spring day; perhaps sunny but not very warm. On the second plate we see a lady in a dune landscape, the blue sea glittering behind the dunes in the background. The lady's cheeks are flushed - this is obviously a hot summer day. On the third plate you see the lady and a black and white dog in an autumnal forest, spotting a deer that seems to be about to run away. In true Boullemier style, the deer in the background is slightly hazy, creating a realistic mood of an autumnal forest. On the fourth plate we see the lady with a brown dog...

  • Spode Felspar Square Dessert Plate, Gilt and Flowers, Regency 1824
    By Spode
    Located in London, GB
This is beautiful square dessert plate made by Spode around the year 1824. The set was made in the famous Spode Felspar china, which was a bright porcelain that included felspar rock, making it exceptionally robust and very suitable for large table services. This plate was a spare of a large dessert service that was sold previously. An identical service is on display in the Spode Museum in Stoke on Trent, on the original place where this service was produced. In a wonderful moment of serendipity, I happened to be standing and admiring that service exactly the moment the service this plate belonged to came up for auction - and I won the bid, enabling me to present it here to you! Josiah Spode was the great pioneer among the 19th Century potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by everyone ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind perfecting the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware. In the early 19th Century Spode also made this "Felspar" porcelain, which was even stronger thanks to a large percentage of the strong felspar rock in the recipe. In the early 19th Century, dinner and dessert services were an important part of the social life of the elite, and particularly the dessert service had to be stunning in order to leave guests with a lasting impression of the wealth and power of the owner. This plate is part of such a show piece. The plate has the printed Spode Felspar Porcelain mark in puce, as well as a hand painted pattern number 3765. CONDITION REPORT The plate is in good undamaged antique condition, with its only flaw being some wear as visible in the pictures. Antique British porcelain...

  • 2 Antique 1862 Minton International Exhibition Jeweled Turquoise Plates
    By Minton
    Located in Dayton, OH
Pair of two Minton plates, circa 1862. Provenance : Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW and American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes and furniture. It also holds an ownership interest in American Eagle Outfitters, Wehmeyer in Germany, Cold Stone Creamery and The Mazel Company. These superb quality Minton plates are from a dessert service shown at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London. The plates testify to the enduring influence of 18th Century Sèvres on the tastes of Victorian high society. The designs are far from being mere copies, however; while there are recognisable Sèvres elements, they are arranged in entirely new and delightful ways. On the rim are four imitation cameo heads of classical deities en grisaille on a red-brown ground, within oval reserves wreathed in laurel. The profiles are individually painted; compare, for instance, the winged helmeted heads of Hermes/Mercury and you will spot subtle differences. The cameo devices, used here for the first time by Minton, derive from the celebrated Sèvres dinner...
