Spode Pottery Neoclassical Greek Pattern Blue Salad Plates Set of Fifteen

About the Item

Spode Pottery neoclassical Greek pattern blue salad plates, Refreshment for Phliasian Horseman (Set of Fifteen) Early 19th century From a large collection of Spode Greek Pattern objects. The Spode Greek pattern pottery plate is printed in blue with Refreshment for Phliasian Horseman in the central panel with neo-classical scenes on panels and urns on the border. This scene shows that after the Phliasian victory in the Peloponnesian War, the horseman receives a drink. Mark: Workmen's marks Condition: Good Dimensions: 8 1/4 inches diameter x 1/2 inches high The neo-classical “Greek” pattern, introduced in 1806, catered to the demand for classical subjects created by the Greek Revival style. The images were taken from “Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton; with engraved borders. Drawn and engraved by the late Mr. Kirk”. This was probably the first multi-scene pattern introduced at the Spode Factory. See Spode Transfer Printed Ware 1784-1833, David Drakard & Paul Holdway, Page 248-250, Pattern Number P906-10.
