Pair of Irish George III Pedestal Sauce Boats, Dublin, 1789

About the Item

This very attractive and rare pair of Irish sauce boats are of oval form. The shaped body with chased and embossed decoration with a gadrooned rim. The scrolling handle is decorated with an acanthus thumb piece and applied decoration. Both standing on a shaped, raised pedestal foot. Clearly hallmarked for Dublin 1789 with the maker’s or sponsor’s mark for Michael Homer. Each sauce boat has a scratch weight underneath. This highly attractive pair of sauce boats are in first-class condition, of very good weight and gauge with a lovely patina, with no damage, dents or repairs. Marks are well struck and clear. Note: Pedestal form sauce boats were revived from the early 18th century, circa 1760, and while English examples can be found, Irish examples from this period are exceptionally rare. They were usually of a heavy gauge of silver with a deeper body.
