Rare Setting for 18, Fruit / Desert Knives and Forks, c.1860
About the Item
So rare to find a complete set for eighteen, in their top quality original presentation case made from Mahogany with the top veneered in lovely burl walnut, complete with it's original working key.
Both the silver plated knives and forks are beautifully decorated and each marked by the famous silversmith, Martin Hall.
Martin Hall & Co was one of the best known British manufacturers and participated to many international exhibitions including the Crystal Palace 1851 Great Exhibition.
Each piece is also lucky enough to have a design registration lozenge mark which allows us to date the design to 12th December 1860.
The case has a beautiful label for the retailer, William C Shaw of Glasgow; well known as a clock and watch maker and was also a silversmith.
A truly fine set in excellent condition. Each knife measures 8 3/4" in length and each fork, 7 1/4". The box measures 12 1/2" x 10 1/4" x 3 1/4".
