1820s Antique Sterling Silver Half Pint Tankard

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George IV sterling silver half pint tankard, part of our wine and drink related silverware collection. This exceptional antique George IV sterling silver half pint tankard has a cylindrical shaped form onto a spreading collet style foot. The body of this small silver tankard is encircled with two fine and impressive broad bands of tooled decoration, in addition to an applied moulded border to the rim. The antique silver tankard retains the original hallmarked domed hinged cover encircled with further bands of tooled decoration, this unusual flanking hinge is an impressive example of engineering for the period and indicates the high quality of the piece. The cover is surmounted with an impressive thumbpiece modelled in the form of a scallop shell. The tankard is fitted with an impressive plain faceted angular handle with an incurved thumbpiece. Such small antique tankards are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition This small silver tankard is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface and to the interior of the cover are very clear, the hallmarks are deeply struck due to the exceptional gauge of silver. The makers mark to the surface has wear due to age and location.     An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Italian silver sterling jug. This exceptional antique Italian sterling silver jug has an oval paneled, flared form onto a circular domed foot. The surface of this antique jug is plain and unembellished, with a matte, subtly planished finish in keeping with the patination of a piece from this period. This impressive piece is fitted with an exceptional cast sterling silver scrolling handle, accented with a leaf design emanating from the thumbpiece, this leaf ornamentation comprises the upper terminal. The circular foot is encircled with a band of embossed bead decoration. This impressive antique silver jug has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as sterling standard silver (925/1000). Patination or Patina is a subtle coloration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look. Condition This antique silver jug is a very good gauge of silver and exceptional quality for its type. The jug is in exceptional presentation condition. Italian hallmarks struck to the surface of the jug and rim of the foot are all very clear.
