Clements Tea Service, Sterling Silver, 1964, Scandinavian Modern Design

About the Item

Hallmarked in Sheffield in 1964 by Elkington & Co. and engraved with Clements facsimile signature, this stylish, 4 piece Sterling Silver Tea Set, was designed by Eric Clements, and is known as the 'Clements' tea service. The teapot measures 6" (15 cm) tall, by 8.5" (21.5 cm) from handle to spout, and the other pieces are in proportion. The set together weighs 59.1 troy ounces. Illustrated in 'Designer British Silver' by John Andrew & Derek Styles, 2014, page 131. A similar example is on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Eric Clements was born in 1925, and studied at the Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts, later joining the Royal College of Art. In 1948 he won a travel scholarship, spending some time travelling around Scandinavia, and became increasingly interested in the Scandinavian Modern design which was popular at the time. On his return to England the influence of this trip can be seen in his work. In 1957 he was appointed Design Consultant to Mappin & Webb, and it was while there, in 1960, that he produced the Clements Tea Service design.
