A set of dishes made in Italy during the 80s, as attested by the date printed on the back of the plate, but inspired by 18th century porcelain, to be precise inspired by the "Saxon-style", a term which can be ascribed to the 18th-century Germanic tradition, according to which porcelain was made with reliefs similar to woven baskets. This vintage dinner service is produced by a historic Italian manufacturer "Richard Ginori" founded in Tuscany, in Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence, of which Gio Ponti was creative director for 10 years. After declaring bankruptcy in 2013, this historic porcelain factory, in operation since 1735, was taken over by the Gucci group which restarted the production of iconic pieces and novelties inspired by archive pieces of the company. This set of dishes is a rarity as it is the result of an unusual combination that has the 18th century as its common thread, with the Rococo style, the scientific discoveries and the new botanical varieties resulting from the new trade routes of the companions of the Indies. On the classic Richard Ginori series, i.e. the total white motif called "Vecchio Ginori" (currently put back into production by Gucci) always and exclusively produced in total white, a botanical print by Abraham Munting depicting an orange plant was printed. Abraham Munting is a Dutch botanist famous for his unusual illustrations where plant species were depicted against a background of classic or pastoral landscapes, often floating in midair with little regard for perspective and relative sizes, in fact, the orange plant is not forced to inside the center of the plate but goes outside the predefined spaces wrapping it. The dinner set consists of 30 pieces: 6 dessert or appetizer plates with a diameter of 19.5 cm 12 soup plates with a diameter of 23cm 12 dinner plates with a diameter of 24.5 cm The service could be considered for 6 with the double serving plate for soups and second courses, or you could purchase 6 totally white fruit plates...

Maiolica tureen “allo struzzo” (ostrich decoration) Milan, Felice Clerici or Pasquale Rubati factory, circa 1750-1780 Measures: 9.25 in x 12.79 in x 10.23 in (cm 23.5 x cm 32.5 x cm 26) lb 4.78 (kg 2.17) State of conservation, a felûre consolidated inside with slight edge chipping restored. In Milan in the 18th century two Majolica warehouses were opened, the first, by Felice Clerici, in 1745, the second in 1756 by Pasquale Rubati. Traditionally this type of decoration has been attributed to the Pasquale Rubati factory. In reality the motif “allo struzzo”, one of the clearest examples of how the taste for chinoiserie met with considerable success during the 18th century, had been produced, in specimens of greater or lesser quality, by both Milanese manufactories. This Maiolica tureen has a swollen and ribbed oval bowl, rests on an extroflexed foot and shows stirrup handles. The tri-color ornament, in the typical tones of Japanese "Imari" decorations, shows an idealized oriental landscape that develops around a perforated rock and has a willow tree with long lance-shaped leaves framing the long-legged bird figure. The ornamentation is enhanced by decorative elements such as butterflies, small florets and a vase with a thin flowery stem. The lid is ribbed with a pear-shaped knob on top. The decoration was called in the Milanese manufactories "allo struzzo" (ostrich decoration) and this refers to the oriental figure Xian He or the crane, symbol of longevity, here losing its symbolic value. Richard Ginori is an historic Italian ceramic's factory founded in Tuscany, in Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence, of which Gio Ponti was creative director for 10 years. This dinnerware is part of a Manufacture collection inspired by the elegant lines of the Empire style and which was out of stock for a long time. Now, the new ownership of the brand, recently purchased by the Gucci Group, has included the Contessa collection back in the range but without the subtle tone-on-tone trim that embellished the gold encrusted rim.
