Sag Harbor Whale Scrimshaw Cribbage Board
About the Item
Authentic Scrimshaw carved into and antique tortoise shell with brass legs. Carved aboard the Ship Argonaut. A whaling ship from Sag Harbor New York from 1814-1832. The detailed carving is amazing with multiple ships, whales and alternating back drops of mountains on one side and a palm tree covered shores on the other.
The ship Argonaut sailed from the Atlantic to the south pacific and arctic waters during the height of the whaling industry. A small obscure whaling ship it was built in Sag Harbor in 1814. Two separate Whale Captain log books from this ship 1817 and 1821 have recently been discovered on eastern Long Island and in the hands of the local Historic societies. We do not know which voyage this piece was carved on but it is detailed with abalone shell center decor and 4 Brass feet. The words "Ship Argonaut" and the Words "Sag Harbor NY". This is a unique part of American history, the whaling industry in Sag Harbor was an amazing time and the stories left in art help to tell the story and apart of the legacy left to us from these legends of the sea.
