Pair of 18th Century Native American Tobacco Store Hanging Trade Figures
About the Item
Extremely rare and very special pair of 18th century native American tobacco store hanging trade figures, hand carved in the half round full length figures of two American Indian women portrayed in the classical noble fashion prominent in the 17th and 18th Centuries. The figures are from the Northeast Woodlands and clad in tunics reminiscent of Roman togas: the Indian "Princess" mythologized at the time. The companion figures are complimentary right and left images, and each wears a feather headdress, tunic and moccasins, and holds a long tobacco twist in their hands.
Both figures remain in remarkable condition with no breaks or loss. The surface is of course well rubbed and darkened with age, and retains a good amount of subdued gilding, all of which appears to be original.
