Set of Four French Gilt Bronze ‘Ormolu’Mounted Glass Three-Light Wall Lights

About the Item

All four wall lights decorated in the same way, elaborately detailed with scrolling foliate decorations and floral embellishments. On each, the depiction of a Classical Greek dramatic male mask is set at the lower central section, which leads to three outward scrolling branches with frosted glass light shades. These charming wall lights are crafted in the beautiful Belle Époque style of design. The European Belle Époque began in the late 19th century and continued until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The period was, in fact, given its name after World War I, as it was felt to be a Golden Age in contrast to the horror of the war. The Belle Époque was emblematic of an optimistic time, when arts, technology, science and cultural innovations were encouraged and flourished. The art and design that emerged from the period is typified by the sense of freedom and pleasure that it evokes.

  • Set of Four Louis XVI Style Jasperware and Gilt Bronze Wall Sconces
    By Henri Vian, Maison Beurdeley
    Located in London, GB
These exquisite wall lights were created in the late 19th century by the famous bronzier, Henri Vian (French, 1860-1905). These wall lights are stamped ‘HV 955’ for Henri Vian, along with ‘BY’ for the prestigious Beurdeley furniture-making workshop (French, founded 1818). Vian purchased several bronze models that were created by Beurdeley when the company closed in 1895. These lights were most likely cast from a Beurdeley model. Typical of both Beurdeley’s and Vian’s work, these lights are designed in an 18th century Louis XVI (Neoclassical) style. The wall lights feature gilt bronze (ormolu) backplates which are designed to look like ribbons, tied in bows and ending in tassels. These ribbons support gilt bronze oval frames...
