Poul Henningsen Brass and Glass PH 3 1/2 -2 1/2 Table Lamp for Louis Poulsen

About the Item

Poul Henningsen brass and glass PH 3½-2½ table lamp for Louis Poulsen. Executed in white opal glass and a brass, chrome or black metallized frame. The Industrial look of the dark metallized surface offers a bold, understated look. The mouth-blown white opal glass shades soften the overall look of the lamp and illuminate its surroundings with a perfect, harmonious and glare-free light that only the classic three-shade system is capable of emitting. The shades are mouth-blown three-layer opal glass, which is glossy on top and sandblasted matte underneath to provide soft and uniform light distribution. This legendary design stems from Henningsen's own, brilliant three-shade system from late 1920s. Poul Henningsen original design from this period was highly functional, some people might even call it ‘Industrial,’ targeted specifically towards young students. The PH 3 ½-2 ½ table is a modern yet classic lamp with an extremely high level of detail. In addition to ensuring improved utilization of the effect of the light source, the two mouth-blown glass lower shades provide pleasant, glare-free lighting in the room as a whole. Price is per item. Available in unlimited quantites in choice of brass, chrome or black metallized frame. Prices vary; this listing is for the brass variant. Accommodates 1x 60W equivalent standard US candelabra base (e12) LED bulb. UL listed. In-stock lead time up to 2-3 weeks. Out of stock lead time can add additional 10 weeks or more. • Vintage Table Lamp Brass "PH-Lamp" by PH / Poul Henningsen, Louis Poulsen, 1940s
    By Louis Poulsen, Poul Henningsen
    Located in Odense, DK
Stunning original production PH-table lamp model "3,5/2" by Poul Henningsen manufactured at Louis Poulsen, Copenhagen in the 1940s. The lamp base is made from patinated brass and white bakelite parts. The shades are all original and unrestored. The upper shade is made from yellow lacquered metal with a wonderful patina while the middle and lower are made from frosted matte glass which gives a wonderful light distribution. A beautiful and rare example of the world famous lamp icon. Poul Henningsen designed the three-shade system back in 1925-1926. The first lights using the system were designed by PH in cooperation with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. PH sought to create glare-free light, direct light where it was most needed, and create soft shadows, using incandescent bulbs as a light source. PH 3/2 Table is a member of the three-shade family. Thus PH did not just design a light, but an entire system – around a thousand different models have been produced over the years. PH was the first person to pursue a scientific approach to light and use the logarithmic spiral as a basis. By using a design based on the logarithmic spiral he achieved even distribution of light over the entire curve of the shade. This even light distribution, together with the diffuse reflection through the glass, made it possible to control glare and shadow. Each shade reduces the amount of light equally, due to their distance from the light source. The PH light model numbers refer to the shade size. Each top shade had a corresponding set of middle and lower shades. In the ‘pure’ models, such as the 2/2, the top shade has a size of about 20 cm, with corresponding lower shades. PH 3/2 Table consists of an app. 30 cm top shade, but uses lower shades from the 2/2 model. These ‘hybrid’ models were introduced due to the desire to hang the pendants at lower heights. The system was also used for wall, table and floor lamps. This specific example has a "3,5" top shade (33,7 cm.) and a "2" middle and lower shade making it a "3,5/2 PH lamp".

Pouls Henningsen PH 3½-2½ Table Lamp. Denmark, designed 1928, new, current production. PH 3 ½-2 ½ Table was designed in 1928 and is one of many development projects undertaken by PH in connection with the development of his world-famous three-shade system. The table lamp is based on PH's original drawings, and comes with the first type of shade holder, with adjustment screws. The top metal shade has a rolled edge, a decorative and stabilising feature that makes the shade appear thicker than the actual material. The two bottom shades are made of mouth-blown opal glass. PH found that this combination utilises the light source more efficiently, directing the light downwards due to the reflection from the white inner surface of the top shade. The frame is brown painted brass giving the lamp the same appearance as the burnished brass lamps of the time – a process that is no longer recommended due to environmental considerations. Material: Top shade: Spun aluminium painted in yellow with a white rolled edge. The inside of the top shade is white. Middle and lower shade are mouth-blown glass. Shade holder: Silk matt...
