Five Mechanical Bank Trade Cards in Frame, circa 1880s

About the Item

Five mechanical bank trade cards are displayed in two separate frames. In one frame are three polychrome trade cards, which the salesmen typically carried with them in a catalogue to show potential buyers examples of banks they had for sale. Occasionally these were left with the wholesalers, but more often than not, the sepia tone cards were given away to potential buyers. The second frame has two examples of those trade cards. The cards went into detail about the specifics of the bank, describing the subject matter, the action, and the cost. Also included was a colorful image of the bank. The three polychrome trade cards in one frame are as follows: "Trick Pony". Excellent condition. No creases or folds. 4 7/8" wide x 3" high. "Eagle and Eaglets". Excellent condition. No creases or folds. Some foxing to part of the white border. 5 1/4" wide x 3" high. "Humpty Dumpty". Fair condition. Colors are nice and bright but there are tears to the lower border, and a 3" crease from half way up the right border down to the middle of the bottom border ending in a one inch tear. (see images). 3 9/16" wide x 5 1/2" high. "Humpty Dumpty" is the rarest of these three cards, followed by "Trick Pony" and then "Eagle and Eaglets". The other frame has two sepia tone trade cards: "Spise a Mule Bank" which is depicted as "Kicking Mule Bank". Excellent condition. No creases or folds. 3" wide x 5" high. "Indian and Bear" which is depicted as "Bear Hunt" Bank. Fair condition with some discoloration and a horizontal crease in the upper third of the card. (see images). 3" wide x 5" high. The trade cards are nicely framed and matted under glass, with a black stencil line around each one and framed in a 3/4" oak frame. Frame with polychrome cards is 16 1/8" wide x 13 3/4" high. Frame with sepia tone cards is 15 5/8" wide x 12 1/2" high. Provenance: from the highly esteemed collection of Ferdinand Weider, who was the leading collector of mechanical banks in the 1940s and 1950s. There are all together only seventeen different polychrome trade cards of mechanical banks, and an unknown amount of the sepia tone trade cards, so they are quite difficult to obtain. Owning mechanical bank trade cards is an important part of collecting mechanical banks as they go to the core of the marketing strategies employed by the manufacturers. I am a leading specialist in the field of antique mechanical coin banks, having been buying, selling, and examining these fine objects for 40 years. This experience makes me well qualified to analyze, evaluate, and guarantee the authenticity of original examples. Note: Please see my other mechanical bank listings I am offering for sale.

  • American Mechanical Bank "Melody-Bank, " circa 1946
    Located in Incline Village, NV
"Melody-Bank" is a rare bank and was manufactured by "Electric Coding Machine Co., N.Y.C." in 1946. American made, this is a genuine and authentic vintage mechanical bank, albeit somewhat later, having been manufactured in 1946. It maintains all of the elements of a collectible antique mechanical bank; pleasing shelf appeal and wonderful musical action. The metal faux textured, green painted casing on five sides is fronted by cardboard on wood, filled with delightful images of "children at play with money" lithography. To operate: Wind up the mechanism by turning the brass dial in front clockwise; then put a nickel, dime, or quarter in the appropriate slot at the top. Music will play as additional lithography depicting children's nursery rhymes rotate on the interior circular dial ("Little Boy Blue", "Mary Had A Little Lamb", etc.). Coins are removed by unscrewing the metal plate at the rear bottom. Bank is in excellent all original condition with fully operable musical mechanism. Dimensions: 7" high x 4 9/16" wide x 3" deep. • American Pottery Pig Bank, Circa 1880's
    Located in Incline Village, NV
American pottery still bank in the shape of a pig, used for saving coins (usually pennies) to encourage children the importance of thrift. Pottery still banks are somewhat scarce since the typical way to remove coins was to smash the bank open, albeit, with this particular example, perhaps a knife was used for coin removal (note the wear to the coin slot---see images) or perhaps the additional wear is also from many coins having been deposited. The bank is in good all original condition , from an unknown potter (unmarked) circa 1880's, and probably a variant of #633 "Two Toned Pig" in Andy Moore's "The Penny Bank Book" written in 1984 when collecting pottery banks...

  • Baines Golfing Trade Card, Bournmouth
    Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Baines golfing trade card, Bournmouth. A rare circular golf trade card in the shape of a bramble golf ball. Made by the toy shop owner from Bradford, John Baines. Baines went on to produce not only football cards but eventually covered scores of different sports, from golf, cricket, tennis to horse racing and bowls, and just about any kind of sporting affiliations in just about every city, town and village in the UK. The cards were promoted in various prize competitions like finding certain "medal cards", collection a certain amount of empty packets. One could always submit a mini essay on sport with the winner having their writing printed on the backs of the cards. Hence why the backs are so varied and different. The Baines card offered for sale is printed in a grey/black tone with a picture of a child with an oversized golf club and the words 'A Budding Amateur' to the front with the words 'Good Shot, Bournmouth'. To the reverse '8th March 1921. Dear Mr Baines, just a few lines thanking you for the present of a cricket set...
