Hand-Carved Jati Wood Arts & Crafts Bookends with Indigenous Male Sculptures

About the Item

Unique and highly decorative pair of hand-carved bookends. At the beginning of the 20th century, the more skilled Dutch artisans started traveling around the globe to various colonial countries and island. The impressions they got from all kinds of styles and peoples they encountered during those travels became part of their psyches. The influence of that can still be seen in many Ducth Arts & Crafts and Art Deco pieces. These sculptural bookends are perfect examples of that development. The physically strong indigenous males must have made a lasting impression on the artist who encountered them, which made him create these wonderful bookends. The emphasis clearly is on the almost bulging muscles, but also in a 'serving' position. Maybe it was this artist's way to portray how he viewed colonialism in general, who knows. The color of the marvelous Jati wood combined with the deep carvings make these highly stylish and meaningful bookends an absolute joy to own and look at. If you like these unique and handcrafted bookends as much as we do, then you will love our price. Also, because perfect packing and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days are complimentary. Maximum height x width x depth: 6.3 x 8.85 x 2.35 inches.
