Very Large Antique Oak W. & A. K. Johnston 30-inch Terrestrial Library Globe

US$19,500

About

A very large and very impressive 30-inch terrestrial floor globe. A so-called 'Treaty of Versailles' period Library scale globe. The gores were published by W. & A. K. Johnston of Edinburgh & London. It has a cartouche inscribed "30 INCH/TERRESTRIAL GLOBE/BY/W. & A. K. JOHNSTON, LIMITED. /Cartographers, Engravers & Printers/EDINBURGH & LONDON" below a Royal coat of arms. Likely assembled and sold by Rand McNally. Having a time dial to the North and South Poles, a bronze (or brass) full-ring Meridian mounted on bearings, and a base in quarter sawn oak with a full mount cradle and four conforming arms supporting the horizon ring. Simply an impressive globe in scale and impact! Date: Early 20th century Overall condition: It is in overall fair, unrestored, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition details: There is significant toning, staining, possible water drip marks, and fading to gores (particularly to the Northern Hemisphere), some spots of losses to gores (and gesso beneath) here and there, scratches to the gores (particularly near the equator), and some drops of paint. There is some damage to the gesso and structure surrounding the pins at the North Pole and South Poles. The oak stand has some edge wear, a chip to the edge here and there, some checking to the horizon ring and a large check to the base. Maker: W. & A. K. Johnston of Edinburgh & London. (Possibly Rand McNally as well. They are linked to several globes with similar bases.) Measurements: Height circa 57 in. (approximate) Diameter circa 37 in. Items purchased from this dealer must delight you. Purchases may be returned for any reason for a period of 7 days.
