American 1980s Music Stand by Michael Coffey

About the Item

An American carved wood music stand by Michael Coffey. This piece represents an evolution in sculptor Michael Coffey's process. Always seeking functionality and beauty in his designs, Coffey attempted perfection in the adjusting mechanism on this piece throughout the 1970s and 1980s before designing this edition. As his only work sculpted in African Wenge wood, this music stand is a rarity, circa 1987. Coffey has consistently broken the boundaries of style and functionality in the decorative arts. Born and raised in New York City, Coffey initially made a career as a social worker before pursuing art seriously in 1972. Teaching himself theory and practice, he was influenced enormously by the examples made by the likes of Wendell Castle, Walker Reed, George Nakashima, Sam Maloof, and others. In 1978, Coffey first presented his Aphrodite rocking chair, a monumental oblong curved piece of wood which excited the market and solidified Coffey’s reputation for creativity and skill. Coffey’s work stresses the relationship shared by people with their furniture. Coffey considers himself an artist, but draws a distinction between impersonal visual arts and furnishings. It is important to the artist that his creations can be used. For Coffey, defying expectations is an important aspect of producing his works. Abandoning symmetry in his designs, the artist prefers to create hollows and rounded shapes which people can fill. To Coffey’s eye, a piece which is perfectly symmetrical is also “quiet,” and does nothing to arouse questions or feelings in the mind of the viewer. Coffey continues to work in his home studio, making little distinction between his design work and his life. His bold designs are still a fixture on the secondary market, indicating the lasting value of an artist like Coffey’s style of audacious design which tosses tradition aside.

  • Art Nouveau Commode by Émile Gallé
    By Emile Gallé
    Located in New York, NY
A French Art Nouveau marquetry commode by Émile Gallé. With original key. Circa 1890. The syncretic influence of Japanese art is keenly felt in Gallé's commode. The beginning of Galle's fascination with Japanese art can be traced back to his friendship with Hokkai Takashima (1850-1931), a fellow botanist and member of the École de Nancy. Their botanical dialogue was facilitated by the Shokobutsu mei-i, a book of Japanese names for botanical species. It is from Hokkai that Gallé gained a spiritual and symbolic understanding of nature. Along with other École de Nancy artists, Hokkai and Gallé exhibited together in the display window of René Wiener's papeterie. The store served as the office of Wiener's arts journal, the Nancy artiste, which regularly featured on its covers contemporary examples of Gansai (Japanese watercolor), Byōbu (folding screens) from the Rinpa school, Sumi-e (ink painting), and Ukiyo-e (woodblock prints). As a show of gratitude, Hokkai bequeathed a vast art book collection to Wiener. It is from this record that we know with certainty of which Japanese artists Gallé had knowledge. One of the books in Hokkai's collection was Hokusai's Les cent paysages du Fuji (Fugaku hyakkei.) This 1835 expansion of Hokusai's 36 views of Mount Fuji...
