Mathieu Matégot Wool Rug by Aubusson, circa 1950, France

About the Item

Mathieu Matégot wool rug by Aubusson Made by the Aubusson manufacture Bold abstract design Signed Providence: Christie's auction house, circa 1950, France With restorations Good vintage condition After studying at Budapest’s school of art and architecture, Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001) created scenery and tapestries for the National Theatre. He settled in France in 1931 and as a volunteer in the French army, was captured and not released until 1944. After returning home, he started producing handmade furniture in Paris. For a decade Matégot created various design classics but at the beginning of the 1960s changed course to focus on the design of tapestries, for which he won international acclaim. Matégot’s organic forms and lightness of touch create a sense of joy and the ground breaking and innovative techniques that he employed result in aesthetic and, above all, contemporary designs. Matégot was the first person to combine metal tubing with perforated sheet metal; a pairing that particularly characterizes his work. Many designers spend years developing their designs, simply to make them better and better. This was certainly not the case with Mathieu Matégot; he only devoted one decade to the design of furniture and interior accessories, yet these distinctive 1950s designs would later be considered iconic. Today, Matégot’s designs are equally fit for purpose as when they were originally conceived and his legendary designs are both timeless and classic.

  • Antique French Aubusson Rug, circa 1890, 8' x 9'
    Located in New York, NY
Antique French Aubusson rug, circa 1890. Aubusson carpets are pile less and tapestry woven from that town to the southwest of Paris, by a group of independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical or Victorian. They are virtually never “oriental”. The pattern wefts are wool with silk and/or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Sizes tend toward the squarish and pieces 30’ by 30’ are not unknown. The 18th-19th century French clients included the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. Aubusson carpets were also exported to England and are often to be found in country houses. Light colors are the most popular and dark toned pieces are very rare. Besides traditional Louis furniture...
