Early 20th Century French Deco Rug by Leleu

About the Item

This traditional handwoven French Leleu deco rug has an overall eu-de-nil field with a profusion of delicate tiles checkered with alternating geometric icons, in a majestic turquoise green border with a complementary outlined geometric stripe overlapping a plain outer eu-de-nil line stripe. About the Designer: Jules Leleu (French, 1883 - 1961) was a French furniture designer famous for tempering Modernism with classical lines. He remains best known for designs featuring simplified shapes, exotic woods, marquetry, and ivory inlays. He was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, a suburb of Paris, on June 17, 1883 and after studying decorative painting he took over his father’s painting business at the age of 26 with his brother, Marcel. He fought in the air force during World War I and then returned home to open a gallery, Maison Leleu, and devoted himself to furniture-making. A year later in 1925, he exhibited at the Exposition Industrielle et Arts Decoratifs where he won the grand prize. His fame grew steadily thereafter, and he went on to design the ocean liners SS Ile de France and SS Normandie, along with several French Embassies around the world and the Grand Salon of the Ambassadors at the Society of Nations in Geneva. After his death on July 11, 1961 in Paris, France, his sons, André and Jean, and his daughter, Paule, took over the family business. Leleu rugs were often very geometric, in keeping with the trends of the art deco movement, and later, the futuristic designs of the mid-20th century. While the large medallions and ornate florals of Oriental carpets went out of vogue at the onset of many mid-20th century interior design trends, the all-over rug design patterns, simple borders, and smart geometry of Leleu rugs made them extremely popular with fashionable clients in Europe and America. Further, the Leleu Firm used a palette of elevated neutrals in their carpet designs — colors like burnt umber and sienna, moss green, charcoal, and rust — colors that remain classic staples of modern interior decorating today. The smart design sense and eye for color that blessed the Leleu family is the firm’s lasting legacy.

The Art Deco style owes its name to the first major exhibition of decorative arts to be held after the First World War: L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925. The supreme elegance of the custom made interiors at the event set an example for interior designers the world over. Inspired by these innovative aesthetic ideas, artists, designers, craftsmen and manufacturers from across Europe and America produced a wide range of modern pioneering patterns that delivered a dramatic change of style to furnishings in general, and early 20th century antique oriental rugs and carpets...
