Grand Repos Lounge Chair Attributed to Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison

About the Item

This rare model Guillereme et Chambron „Grand Repos” Chaise Lounge was manufactured in France in the 1950s. The exceptional refinement of the design is ensured by a sculptural frame with an oblique and streamlined line at the same time. The backrest of the frame is cleverly made of six vertically areanged, wooden spindles. This form allows the pillow to be placed in a comfortable, slightly tilted position, and at the same time exhibits a surprising complexity with profiled armrests with semicircular carvings and oblique, truncated legs. “Grand Repos” stands for “great rest” in French and it is the largest model, 101 cm high, providing exceptional comfort. The armchair is upholstered with the highest quality wool frabic from Pierre Frey with a light elegant character. The frame made of solid oak wood creates an original combination. This is a masterful example of contrast expressed not only by color but also by texture. The composition is complemented by quilting on the backrest arranged in a symmetrical pattern. Thanks to bright shade and made with the utmost care oak details, "Grand Repos" Lounge Chair permeates the space, providing unique structure and forging a strong relationship with the home. Dimensions: Width: 78 cm / 30.71 in. Depth: 95 cm / 37.41 in. Height: 104 cm / 40.95 in. Seat Height: 38.5 cm / 15.18 in. About the Designer: Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron, a French creative duo who met and developed a deep friendship under unusual circumstances. During the Second World War, the two met in a stalag, a Prussian prisoner camp, while being imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia. Guillerme had graduated from the École Boulle in 1934 with a degree in design and architecture, and Chambron had studied at the School of Applied Arts in Reims. After the war ended, Guillerme moved to Lille in northern France; Chambron left his job as a painter and decorator in Paris and joined him in 1948. In 1949, the pair met Émile Dariosecq, a skilled cabinetmaker who enthusiastically agreed to manufacture the duo’s designs, leading to the create their company. They called it “Votre Maison” which means “Your Home”. They built a worldwide reputation by creating products that focused on functionality combined with beautiful design useful in everyday life. Their furniture, mostly made of various shades of waxed oak, followed the design trends that emerged after the war: mid-century modernism. The furniture designed by this duo has a strong character and perfectly expressive woodwork. All three shared their work equally. Overall, Guillerme worked as a designer, Chambron as an advertisement, and Dariosecq’s workshop manufactured the pieces. In its career, “Votre Maison” has produced over two thousand models, leaving a permanent mark in the world of design. One of Votre Maison’s most famous and popular pieces was the Grand Repos armchair, a stately, high-backed wide piece with a skeletal oak frame, six spindles and plush cushions.
