About the Item

Shiro Kuramata was a Japanese designer known for his innovative and avant-garde furniture designs. He was born in 1934 in Tokyo, Japan and studied at the Tama Art University in the 1950s. Kuramata is particularly known for his use of materials such as acrylic and glass in his designs, which were often characterized by their minimalistic and geometric forms. His most famous design is the "How High the Moon" chair. Kuramata's work was highly influential in the world of furniture design, and he was known for pushing the boundaries of what was possible with materials such as acrylic and glass. He was also a master of color and texture, often incorporating subtle shades and finishes into his designs to create a sense of depth and movement. In addition to furniture design, Kuramata also worked on architectural projects and product design. He designed store interiors for clients such as Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto, and also worked on exhibition and display design. Kuramata passed away in 1991, but his work continues to be highly respected and influential in the world of design. His designs have been displayed in museums and galleries around the world and are considered to be true masterpieces of modern design. This set of 4 armchairs was manufactured by Pastoe in the 1990s. The chairs are a very comfortable upholstered version of the Pastoe wire chairs designed by Shiro Kuramata. Recent wool upholstery, marked with Pastoe label.
