About the Item
A rare and exquisite pair of French Mid-century Hand Carved Chestnut Benches or Stools in the Modern Craftsman style and attributed to Alexandre Noll. The benches are composed of thick, solid chestnut and are ruggedly carved revealing the details and inner beauty of the chestnut wood. The form of the pieces is iconic as they rest on 4 naturally carved legs given the appearance of being formed entirely by nature itself. The seats are thick with a natural, irregular form revealing the concentric patterns of the wood. Overall, the pieces are works of art and sculpture in their transcendent appearance, verdant harmony with nature, refreshing modern brutalist forms and self revealing character. Only a master such as French artist / craftsman Alexandre Noll or someone working closely with him could delicately conceive and execute such works.
Alexandre Noll (1890-1970) was the foremost wood sculptor in France from 1920 to 1950 period. His works inspire confidence in man's intimate relationship to the natural world.
