Niels Otto Møller
Working in rich woods to create durable furniture that is today recognized for its elegant simplicity and solid craftsmanship, Niels Otto Møller was one of the original designers of the famed Scandinavian modern movement that swept through postwar Europe and, eventually, the United States.
At the age of 19, Møller studied to be a cabinetmaker, gaining a strong affinity for working with natural materials. He furthered his education at the local design academy in his hometown of Århus, Denmark, where, in 1944, he established J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. Møller’s first chair — called simply No. 1 — was introduced in 1946. In 1961, he expanded his thriving business by opening a factory in Højbjerg, producing his popular dining chairs as well as armchairs, lounge chairs, tables and more. Rather than unnecessary ornamentation, he focused on a warm and more minimalist approach that valued function over form. Nearly all of his pieces, from the 1962 Model 78 chair to his simple tables, feature gentle curves formed from woods such as rosewood and teak (a sought-after material among furniture designers of the time).
Though the furnishings boasted a contemporary look and were a departure from the ornate designs of the recent past, Møller’s company crafted all of them using traditional, age-old techniques. For instance, the 1959 Model 77 side chair’s seat is handwoven using a single 425-foot-long cord. Today, the Danish furniture designer’s refined pieces continue to be as sought after as they were when mid-century modernism was in full swing.
The company, still based in its original factory, remains a family business, now headed by Møller’s granddaughter, Kirsten Møller. Along with new pieces, they craft the celebrated original designs, from raw wood to finished assembled products, that made J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik a renowned name in Danish Modern design.

- Rosewood Set of 2 Niels Otto Møller Armchairs No 62, Denmark, 1960'sBy Niels Otto Møller, J.L. Møllers MøbelfabrikLocated in Amsterdam, NLAn elegant anthropomorphic set of 2 armchairs in rosewood by the renowned Danish designer Niels Otto Møller. Back in the days these chairs wíth armrests were always part of a set of more of these chairs, most of them without armrest. Depending on how many children you had or how many guests you would like to seat, you could decide how many you wanted. Most of the time it was a set of six. It was quite common that only the father and let's assume also the mother (we are talking Scandinavia who are always well ahead of their time), had one wíth armrest and the rest of the set would be without the armest. For this reason the ones with armrest are always a bit higher in value. You could probaly find these charis at the head and foot of the table with the father and mother overseeing the evening dinner. These armchairs are made of solid of high quality Brazilian rosewood so they are very sturdy and heavy. Brazilian rosewood has good carving properties and you can see that back in the shape of the frame with nicely made details. The result of all this is an open and inviting chair with a formal and classic appearance. Lots of details such as the little hornets and the nice curves in the armrest both in the length as in the corner. The two chairs both need reupholstery which is the perfect way to let them melt together as a set, because the rosewood is exactly similar in colour. We would advice some high quality leather and no filling to create the same look as the one with the lighter upholstery, where you can still see the shape of the frame, which is an essential part of the design. So as the one on the right in the pictures. These chairs by Niels Otto Møller are still in production but not in Rosewood anymore. So the rosewood-version is the most sought after because Brazilian Rosewood is a very much protected species nowadays. If you can prove that these chairs were made before a certain period, and in this case we can, then you export them with the correct forms...Category
