Artifort/ ‘t Spectrum SZ10 ’M-Chair’ by Ebbing, Haas & Schudel, 1980s

About the Item

This very rare M-Chair was designed by Hans Ebbing, Ton Haas and Paul Schudel as part of an assignment for the Academy of Arts in Arnhem, The Netherlands, initiated by their teacher and well-known Dutch Designer Gijs Bakker. Their research was mainly focused around the idea that a designer has to have complete freedom in his work, without the limitations of production or commercial interests. The result was this dashing M-chair. With its unique metal frame inside the wooden panels, its invisible screws and bolts, and its very comfortable hammock-like seat, a true masterpiece was born. It was recognized as such by Dutch manufacturer Artifort, who took the chair in production in 1980, to be taken over by ‘t Spectrum in the next couple of years. Unfortunately not many chairs were sold, the limitations of production made the chair too expensive. The M-Chair is out of production to this date and a real rarity on the design market. The listed M-Chair features wooden red lacquered panels and a seat in red fabric. The chair is in original, unrestored condition with some trace of use to the red lacquer and slight discoloration round the edges of the fabric. A unique item for the discerning design collector.
