Monumental Pair of 'Magister' Lounge Chairs by Sculptor Franz Sartori, 1966

About the Item

Rare and beautiful pair of monumental 'Magister' lounge chairs, designed in 1966 by Italian sculptor and artist Franz T Sartori for 'Flexform', Milan Italy. This rare and exquisite design was first exhibited at the 7th 'salon di mobile' in Milan in 1967 and had a dedicated full, two page feature, published in the September 1967 edition of the famous Italian design journal 'INTERNI - La rivista dell arredamento'., please see images 2 and 3. Sartori is best known for his organic form sculptures but he also had a brief foray, in the mid to late sixties, designing furniture which also reflected his sculptural aesthetic. The pure sculptural lines of these chairs is really set off by the warm white fabric contrasting with the exquisite sculptural form mahogany legs which feature delicate aluminium inserts which add decoration and stability to their slim profile. The upholstery on the chairs has been fully restored including new foam throughout and they are finished in a lovely 'Monza Bouclé' fabric by the renowned Dutch textile manufacturer 'DE PLOEG'. This fabric has a very nice deep pile combined with a very high 80,000 martindale rub rating so it should last the rigors of life for a long time. The manufacturer 'Flexform' was a company always at the forefront of modern Italian design producing other avant garde classics such as Joe Colombo's iconic sculptural form 'tube' chair. Restoration: Both chairs have been stripped right back to their bare wood frames and have reupholstered with new foam and fabric throughout. the fabric used is by the renowned Dutch textile manufacture DE PLOEG and the name of the fabric is 'Monza Bouclé'. We have kept a full photographic record of the restoration process including photos of the pieces in their original upholstery ie prior to restoration and them being stripped back to their bare wood frames plus additional series of photos of the reupholstery process.
