Rare Brown Antique Lounge Chair 'Le Surrepos Du Dr. Pascaud' Paris, circa 1924

About the Item

This chaise longue is called le surrepos du Docteur Pascaud. It was manufactured in Paris, France, circa 1924 and features a natural beech frame, upholstered and covered with horse hair and, most likely, brown pony skin leather. It's frame also features a wooden wheel for adjusting the wonderful padded backrest and seat. The chair was designed and created with movable armrests so that getting in and out of the chair was easy. This design was an inspiration for Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand when they worked on their idea of creating a continuously adjustable lounge chair, which eventually resulted in their famous "Chaise longue basculante" made of tubular steel. We believe that this stunning chair might be one of the first ones that have been made. It stood the test of times well, though it shows significent wear consisting age and use (see:photo's). Completed with a back cushion. Charming Collectors item with great patina! Lit. J. Barsac, Charlotte Perriand. Un art d'habiter, Paris 2005, p. 50 (sketch by Charlotte Perriand, 1928, p. 51 (advertisement for le Surrepos du docteur Pascaud and sketches by Ch. Perriand, 1928)
