Rare 18th Century Walnut Wood Commode from the Île-de-France Region

About the Item

Île-de-France, sometimes called Région Parisienne, is centered around Paris and includes other notable places such as Fontainebleau and Versailles. During the 18th century, workshops from this region (directed by the French monarchy) produced beautiful pieces of furniture for royalty and the upper class of many European nations. One such creation is our rare four-tier commode, which was hand-carved in the early 1700’s, during the Regence period (the vast majority of these commodes were made with only three tiers of drawers). At over 42 inches in height, it is unusually tall, and certainly creates a visual impact. The top of the chest has molded edges and a slight arbalete (crossbow) shape, also seen on the front face. Round pegs were used during construction to join the top to the side planks. These sides feature a central rectangular panel with an arched top that is made from walnut wood. The panel is surrounded by a thin molding and slotted in between two oak boards. The top row has two half drawers that bisect a center panel, while the next three tiers each have one full length drawer. There is one key that works a lock on each drawer. Fluted bronze pulls with central rosettes are affixed to each drawer via fittings embellished with a lozenge patterned background. The fixtures also feature interlaced borders comprised of husks and flowers spilling from cornucopias. Keyplates, also made of bronze, depict a mascaron with rinceaux margents trailing from the sides of the head. In between the margents is a scalloped oval medallion festooned with roundels. Typical of Île-de-France commodes from the Regence period, each of the drawers has been carved with bell-shaped recessions at the corners of each panel, known as “En Chapel” molding. The two outer panels, which contain the drawer pulls, are larger than the center panel where the keyplates are located. Commodes from this era/region also featured straight legs with block feet and an unadorned curved apron, all of which can be seen here. In 18th century France, commodes would often be placed in a prominent position of a room, such as against a wall in between two windows. Replacements made: One vertical mullion has been replaced with oak wood. Oak wood has also been used to replace boards on each of the sides. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Beautiful old condition, wear commensurate to age: minor nicks, losses, and age separations. Traces of old repairs and wood worm. The key works the locks, but the bolt of lock on the top left drawer does not engage. Top likely refinished 19thc.
