18th Century Italian Louis XVI Commode Maggiolini Style Marquetry

About the Item

Extraordinary Italian Louis XVI commode chest dating back to late 18th century, realized in the manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini, the famous Italian cabinetmaker, whose masterpiece became sought-after throughout Europe, with extensive inlay and marquetry of multiple rare woods over a walnut structure, in quite overall good condition. This Northern Italian late 18th century commode features superlative marquetry and round inlaid medallions on each sides, with two different architectural landscapes, front and top. Three graduated long drawers, each with parquetry inlaid perimeters, veneered throughout in superlative timbers, including walnut, maple, fruitwood, boxwood, ebony. Both sides, front and top are decorated with an upper band of inlaid festoons with bouquet of different flowers an with superlative fielded, figural and architectural panels, depicting a round medallion with birds on the top; a muse with a lyre surrounded by an angel on the front and architectural elements are the inlaid motifs of the sides. The interior of the drawers is made of solid walnut. This is a very striking Italian Louis XVI piece that would make a statement in any room. Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), began working as a carpenter for a monastery and then established his own workshop in Milan in 1758. In addition to serving the court of Milan, Maggiolini created pieces for other European royalty including the king of Poland, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the duchess of Austria, and Napoleon's widow, Empress Maria Luisa. This antique chest of drawers comes from an exclusive private Milanese palazzo and shows many signs of its history of 250 years, see closed-up details, top showed slight curvatures, overall minor veneer losses and detachments, SEE LAST LISTED PICTURE PREVIOUS RESTORATION. It has been restored and polished with gommalacca shellac, it is now in good condition, consistent with age and use.
