MEMPHIS "PLAZA" Woman's Vanity by Michael Graves 'Design: 1981'

About the Item

Probably one of the rarest & most important works of late-20th century art furniture ever created!! In particular, an absolute tour-de-force by Michael Graves --- the greatest Postmodernist Architect of the 20th century! In terms of form and composition, one could liken it to many of Graves' buildings (Humana Tower, Louisville; Portland Municipal Building, Portland, Oregon; Government of the Netherlands Congress Bldg; etc. The Plaza vanity and stool is a true Museum-piece with pivoting brass-rimmed silvered mirror, hand-matched bird's-eye maple, lacquered wood (in his archetypal color palette of grayish-teal), mirrored "Busby Berkley-ish perfume shelves, brass and elegant light blue-gray velvet upholstery. Only approx. 40 units ever made. Will be sold with original provenance sheets. The Plaza Vanity is in the decorative and design collections of several distinguished museums, Lacma, Los Angeles; Detroit Institute of Arts; Pompidou Museum, Paris; etc. This particular work of art is completely unused, in pristine condition, still in its original crates. Perfect & museum-worthy!! An heirloom piece of handmade, glorious furniture, from an era never to be repeated. When seen in person, it seems otherworldly in presence!!.

  • MEMPHIS "HILTON" Glass Trolley/BarCart by Javier Mariscal (Design: 1981)
    By Javier Mariscal
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Sleek, happy-looking glass & lacquered steel rolling bar & serving cart by the most iconic Spanish designer of the 1980's --- Javier Mariscal!! He designed the mascot/logo Gobi for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, including the colorful, Miro-like Olympic logo. His nightclubs, hotels, restaurants & other furniture objects always possessed a great sense of verve & wit --- this HILTON cart looks as though it could get a ticket for speeding even while it is standing still!!! Javier was born in Valencia in 1950. In 1971 he moved to Barcelona to study Graphic Design at the acclaimed Elisava School. While there, he formed alliances with counter-culture radical comic book writers and illustrators of the time, such as Mique Beltrán, Daniel Torres and Sento. Together they set up "El Rollo Enmascarado", a group specialized in underground subversive comics. In the 1980s, he worked as interior designer of nightclubs, collaborated with Memphis and (as stated) created Cobi, the mascot for the 1992 Olympic...
