Studded Leather Bar Cabinet After Otto Schulz
About the Item
Vintage walnut cabinet with two doors and side panels of brown leatherette artistically decorated with small chrome head tacks representing various native flora and fauna of New England, including beaver, moose, turtle, wolf, deer, bear, fox, herron, frog, hawk, fish, doves, pine tree, cattails, lily pads, river, stars, and more.
The inside of the doors have been upholstered in a blue fabric outlined in nailhead and decorated with the zodiacal constellations of the night sky using white string and chrome tacks.
The interior is fitted with fixed shelves of varying sizes.
This piece was clearly inspired by the work of Swedish designer, Otto Schulz who during the 1930's created furniture for his company, Boet, which included cabinets of similar form that were wrapped in leather then decorated in his patented "bopoint" motif of tiny pearl sized tacks.
One design in particular, "Paradise", seems to have been the specific influence behind this New England wildlife theme which was based on a design by Swedish artist, Gunnar Erik Ström (1892-1982).
The cabinet is very solid and rather heavy. It stands 12 inches off the floor.
