English 19th Century Victorian Whimsical Gothic Influenced Shelf
About the Item
English Victorian country hanging shelf with gothic influence. This shelf was probably made by an individual who wanted to create a shelf with character for a particular spot or person. This rather naive and quirky piece used wood that was at hand, namely pine. The perky shape with its peaked roof, wavey edges that frame the shelves, the peaked spires to either side of the shelf body and the unusual bottom shelf with its large over hanging base, makes this a special piece that could be used in a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or any place where a bit of whimsey is needed. It can also be used as a shelf that sits flat on a surface such as a kitchen counter. Circa 1875.
