Adolfo Genovese Walnut Sideboard for F & G Handmade Furniture 1954

About the Item

Walnut credenza custom made in 1954 by the Cambridge, MA workshop of F & G Handmade Furniture lead by Adolfo Genovese. Rectangular case supported on four curved tapered legs with hand cast solid brass sabots. Intense graining and coloring. Three central drawers (top one divided) flanked by a pair of doors behind each of which is an open cabinet with an adjustable single shelf and a single drawer. Embellishing the front across the doors and middle drawer is a solid walnut pull in the form of an elongated ellipse. Sculptural mid-century Italian styling of brass and walnut pulls of top and bottom drawer. Founded in 1939 by Adolfo Genovese, F & G Handmade Furniture was the pre-eminent workshop for fine custom furniture and cabinetry in metro Boston from WWII through the mid-1970's. Adolfo and son, Edward, created exceptionally well crafted bespoke furniture in many styles, never yielding their high standards for the sake of cost or expediency. For example, they imported fine woods from which they would cut and create their own veneers. Their work consisted mainly of one-off designs created for and often in consultation with specific clients who included notable families, well to do individuals as well as universities and institutions. This sideboard was part of a dining room set commissioned by Samuel VanDerMolen of Newton, MA in 1954 through his decorator Peni Jacobson Interiors of Brookline, MA. (See original invoice.)
