Lella & Massimo Vignelli Ara Console Table in Wood and Glass by Driade 1974

About the Item

Ara console table with a wooden structure and a glass top designed by Lella and Massimo Vignelli and manufactured by Driade in 1974. Licterature: G. Gramigna, Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000, p. 225, Allemandi, 2003. On January 10, 1931, Massimo Vignelli was born in Milan, Italy. He attended an art school, Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, before earning an Architecture degree from the Politecnico di Milano, 1953. During the period between 1953 and 1957, he attended the School of Architecture and University of Venice. Early in his professional career, his chief area of expertise was graphic designing for products and corporate identity creation. Also Vignelli tweaked a design for the ‘Fungo’ table lamp by creating a series of lighting fixtures. In the late 1950s, he earned a fellowship to study in United States at Towle Silversmiths, Massachusetts and the Institute of Design, Chicago. In 1957, he married Lella Vignelli, whom he met at an architecture convention. A few years later they established their small design studio, the Lella and Massimo Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture, Milan. The studio dealt with designing domestic products, office accessories, graphics and furniture. In 1965, the Vignellis moved to Chicago, US, where they founded Unimark International which specifically focused on corporate graphic designing. It was Vignellis’s innovative IDEA of introducing the Helvetica typography in visual communication that went viral all over United States. They employed the rudimentary geometric shapes such as cube, pyramid, spheres and cylinders in a variety of product designs. These designs appeared balanced, appealing and functional. According to the founder of the firm, the designer should be able to design everything from a needle to a whole metropolis. A wide-range of deigning programs was introduced in the company from environmental planning to tableware and packaging showcasing versatile and novel ideas. In 1966, Vignelli expanded his business and launched a branch of Unimark International in New York. Soon it became the largest firm in the world for its Expansion into an array of domains and covering variety of lifestyles. The firm takes pride in establishing some of the notable and prestigious corporate identities, including that of American Airlines. Vignelli designed the signage for New York City Subway system and the DC Metro. In 1971, he resigned from the company as it got sidetracked from the vision he created and single-mindedly focused on product marketing rather than the design itself. Subsequently, Vignelli and Lella founded another firm, Vignelli Associates. Once again his firm attracted high-profile clients seeking corporate identity assistance. These top-notch corporations included Knoll, Bloomingdale’s and IBM. In addition to art direction, Vignelli also penned a book, titled Vignelli: From A to Z. The book details Vignelli’s ideas and vision with regard to graphic designing in the form of essays. The essays are organized in an alphabetical order as hinted in the title. In fact, they are based on somewhat the same course Vignelli gave lectures on while teaching at Harvard’s School of Design and Architecture. In 2009, Vignelli launched a free e-book, The Vignelli Canon, with the aim of passing on his legacy and treasure of knowledge on designing to young designers. Massimo Vignelli died on May 27, 2014.

  • Gabetti & Isola Console Table in Black Lacquered Metal and Granite by Arbo 1970s
By Arbo, Roberto Gabetti and Aimaro Isola
    Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
Console table with a base in black lacquered metal and an ovoidal table top in granite, originally designed by Aimaro Oreglia d'Isola and Roberto Gabetti for the residential center Talponia based in Ivrea, and manufactured by Arbo during the 1970s. The activity of the studio of Roberto Gabetti (1925 - 2000) and Aimaro Oreglia d'Isola (1928) began in the fifties of the twentieth century. The Stock Exchange building, built in collaboration with Giorgio and Giuseppe Raineri in 1953, represents the first evidence of the design and layout of each individual part of the building, including furniture and fixed furnishings. The chairs, desks and sofas designed for the Stock Exchange are made by small Turin workshops (in particular the Colli di Torino furniture factory), with wood turned into organic shapes or veneered and polished and connected by open metal parts with a stiffening function, with extraordinary attention to detail. The chair with a "vertebrae" structure, in particular, conceived in 1952 in blackened beech wood, has two visible metal leaf springs...

  • Giovanni Offredi Sunny Round Pedestal Table in Wood and Glass by Saporiti 1970s
    By Giovanni Offredi, Saporiti
    Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
Sunny pedestal table with a structure in wood and a round-shaped tabletop in smoked glass, designed by Giovanni Offredi and manufactured by Saporiti during the 1970s. Giovanni Offredi was a prominent Italian furniture and product designer of the second half of the 20th century. As opposed to most of the other Italian furniture designers of his time, Giovanni Offredi was not an architect, nor did he start designing early in his professional career. Instead, Offredi partially fits the career path of some of the talented contemporary designers who pursue product design outside of formal education in architecture. The earliest furniture design work known by Giovanni Offredi consists of exemplary furnishings made specifically for some of wealthy families in Milan. Such is the case of the works done by Offredi for Casa C., in 1960, in Gorgonzola, a small town 14 miles from Milan. These works were designed with a surprisingly minimal simplicity and elegance, and they also clearly display a hallmark of his design work with the use of angular lines and exposed metal or wood frames—not unlike some of the modern Scandinavian designs of the time. In the late 1960s, Giovanni Offredi met Sergio Saporiti, the owner of an Italian design shop and furniture maker Saporiti, and in 1970, Offredi formalized a partnership with the furniture maker. This partnership would be long and successful and resulted in many furniture designs of distinct precision that were clearly modern and innovative and that went on to enjoy considerable commercial success. The most prominent furniture designs that Offredi made for Saporiti include the Paracarro table...
