Elliptical Oval Dining Table by Adolfo Genovese for F&G Handmade Furniture

About the Item

Designed and handcrafted in the 1954 by Adolfo Genovese for F & G Hand Made Furniture of 121 First Street East Cambridge, Massachusetts. Absolutely breathtaking walnut dining table of Italian modernist styling with an elliptical oval top over a single pedestal with four curved tapering outstretched legs around a brass hoop ring and hand cast solid brass sabots raised on brass ball feet. The intensely figural walnut top is open grain and satin finished. The underside of the table has a molded dome-like edge all the way around including under the leaf. Measures: 28 inches high 42-3/4 inches wide at center. 82 inches long closed 104 inches long when fully expanded with single 22 inch wide leaf. Founded in 1939 by Adolfo Genovese, F & G Handmade Furniture was the pre-eminent workshop for fine custom furniture and cabinetry in metro Boston post WWII through the early 1970's. F & G, which was owned by father and son, Adolfo and Edward Genovese, created exceptionally well crafted bespoke furniture in many styles, never yielding their high standards for the sake of cost or expediency. For example, they imported fine woods from which they would cut and create their own veneers. Their work consisted mainly of one-off designs created for and often in consultation with specific clients who included notable families, well to do individuals, Gerte, Charak, the White House, as well as universities and institutions. I recently learned from a former employee of F&G that when the Charak workshop closed in 1958 F&G took over production for for the Charak line, including the Tommi Parzinger collection for Charak Modern, through the mid-1960’s, under the name Charak.. This table was part of a suite commissioned by Samuel VanDerMolen of Newton, MA in 1954 through his decorator Peni Jacobson Interiors of Brookline, MA. (See original invoice.) To the best of my current knowledge only one other table like this was ever made by F&G.
