Pierre Dining Table or Desk

About the Item

The Pierre dining table or desk by George Sowden for Memphis (1981) is a remarkable piece of 20th century craftsmanship. It's legs are separate but vividly-lacquered "building blocks" of wood --- stacked securely on top of one another with a center steel shaft for strength. The laminated top is an intricate group of hand-cut laminate "herringbone" motifs --- so precisely cut that not one chip or blemish exists in the physical pattern. The beauty of the table top was indeed so mesmerizing that the great Italian Couturier Romeo Gigli used them exclusively in his North American shops in the 1980s --- piled high with his equally vivid sweaters, shirts and blouses!!
