French Mid-Century Rosewood End Table, by Jules Leleu

About the Item

French midcentury rosewood round end table with a floral inlaid top of mother of pearl and ebony supported on three scroll legs connected with a stretcher base (JULES LELEU). Jules Leleu was a French furniture designer famous for tempering Modernism with classical lines. He remains best known for designs featuring simplified shapes, exotic woods, marquetry, and ivory inlays. He was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, a suburb of Paris, on June 17, 1883. Jules Leleu went into business in 1924 and in so doing sowed the seed of a dynasty unmatched for its special combination of genius, productivity and longevity. With his great success at the Expositon International des Arts-Decoratifs in 1925, at the height of the Art Deco period, he established an aesthetic as modern, supple and magnificently well balanced as anyone working at the time, including those of his famed competitors Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Jean-Michel Frank.
