Born in Lithuania in 1898, he and his family moved to Brooklyn, New York, when he was eight. He worked as a professional lithographer while attending high school, New York University, the City College of New York, and the Art Students League. Important one-man retrospectives were presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1947 and at Amsterdam in 1961. The works of Shahn and Willem de Kooning alone were chosen to represent contemporary American art in 1954 Venice Biennale.
