Large Framed Drawing Ethan Murrow

About the Item

Artist: Ethan Murrow, (American, 1975-) Title: Reversing Extinction IV Medium: Graphite on paper Date: 2005 Size: 40" x 40" Frame: 48" x 48" black shadow box. Signed, titled and dated verso (exposed) Provenance: Property of an estate, originally purchased from the Obsolete, Inc., Venice, CA. Biography of the artist from Artsy: In multimedia works, Ethan Murrow builds narratives featuring characters with pathological ambitions. “It seems to me that there is a fragile line between reckless obsession and brilliant success,” he has said. “My work resides in this area, applauding ridiculous pursuits and cringing at ill-fated experimentation.” Murrow begins his process by creating collaborative film works, after which he builds installations composed of props, reused as sculptures, and photorealistic graphite drawings based on film stills. These drawings resemble black-and-white newspaper photos from the early 20th century, and suggest a pseudo-documentary archive of the pursuits of Murrow’s characters. Although he deals with grand themes of human ambition, Murrow infuses his work with absurdist humor, revealing the comedic failure of his subjects. Ethan Murrow has been widely exhibited across the United States, and in France, Georgia, and Hong Kong. In addition to working on paper, Murrow creates large-scale wall drawings which have been featured in museums and corporate collections, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston MA, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Jacksonville, FL, and Facebook Offices in Ireland. He is the recipient of multiple residencies and awards, including the Ballinglen Arts Foundation Fellowship, Ireland, and Artist in Residence Fellowship, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Nebraska. Ethan Murrow is based in Boston, MA, where he is a professor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University.
