Large 18th Century Red Chalk Drawing of Ruins after Hubert Robert

About the Item

The Tomb of Caecilia Metella, Rome. Red chalk on paper. Provenance: H. Shickman Gallery, New York (D1311). Label verso where given to Hubert Robert. This sumptuous drawing is a contemporary and direct copy of a drawing now in the Musee des Beaux Arts de Rouen, France (inv. AG 1964.4.11). It is probably by the hand of Pierre-Joseph Antoine - see 'Trésors de l'ombre. Chefs-d'oeuvre du dessin français du XVIIIe siècle', 2013-2014, Rouen, n° 114 and 116. The subject matter is the Tomb (or mausoleum) of Cecilia Metella, the most famous tomb of the Via Appia Antica. This monument is dedicated to the daughter of the consul Quintus Metellus, wife of Marcus Crassus. It was built sometimes during the first century BC. As is typical with the painter, Hubert Robert used the drawing (dated circa 1758-1759 when he was studying in Rome) as the base for a painting now in the collections of the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg (inv. 5650) painted around 1760. The drawing was also copied by Jean-Robert Ango and that copy is in the Musee de Grenoble.
