Late 19th Century Academic Drawing of Homer

About the Item

This drawing most likely French comes from the late 19th century, circa 1880. The drawing is well completed and shows the man as a living blind scholar in life and not as a classical bust or a removed station or representation. Techniquely well done and surely an interpretation of a bust but presented without a socle or scale the drawing has life and even character. Probably done as a teaching assignment this work is fully and artistically nuanced. Please note the deep shadow and chiaroscuroed perspective. The skin and folds of the flesh are well rendered as are the hair and especially the sightless eyes with a hint of pupil and cornea. The hollow of the neck and musculature creating the shoulders and chest are done well and with a knowledge of life modeling. The work is as found matted and presented in a period lemon gilded frame keeping the sense of antiquity and age. The drawing is in excellent condition the frame with rub through and wear expected with age.
