"African Youth with Gourds and Flowers, " English Art Deco Painting, 1946
About the Item
A brilliant painting executed in vivid colors, this view of an African male youth holding a basket of gourds and an enormous bouquet of calla lilies, day lilies and other tropical blooms, was created by one of Britain's masters of tempera in the mid-century, Stuart Armfield. The painter was known for his views from Morocco and Spain, where he had a home, as well as from Cornwall, where he maintained a studio for decades. This piece, however a combination of figural, landscape and still life painting is placed in Sub-Saharan Africa, clear from the young man's leopard skin loin cloth, tropical vegetation, and native huts in the distance. This painting was exhibited at the the Royal Watercolor Society's exhibition in May, 1946, and executed in tempera. (Dimensions include frame).
