The reverse glass painting was invented in the mid-18th century by Arnaud Vincent de Montpetit. These small oil paintings on fine canvas are glued and fixed under a protective glass. Louis-Nicolas and Henri-Joseph van Blarenberghe were two French brothers born in Lille, painting usually in gouache during the 18th century. Their style - close to Flemish painting, was similar and they often worked on the same painting together. They specialized in seascapes and scenes of military encampments and battles. Miniatures by the brothers often decorated snuff boxes and small decorative objects.
