About the Item
A moving portrait of a young aristocratic French woman on her way to the guillotine during the French Revolution's infamous Reign of Terror that lasted about a year between 1793 and 1794. The painting was executed (no pun!) by Claude Marie Dubufe ( b 1790 d 1864) who titled the painting " L'Effroi " or " Le Terreur " meaning "fear"" and terror" respectively, both sentiments clearly evident on the young girl's face. Besides the fear in her face, the artist has also highly accentuated the woman's graceful neck soon to be cruelly bloodied by the blade of the guillotine.
Claude-Marie-Paul Dubufe (1790–1864) was a French historical, genre and portrait painter who studied under the renowned Jacques Louis David. At first his subjects were drawn from classical times like those of David but later switched to the more commercially rewarding portraiture. It is through his talent as a portrait artist that his reputation was made. One would imagine that this portrait was drawn from real life, but not so, as Claude Marie was just a toddler during the reign of terror. The work is in fact dated 1825, more = than 30 years after the reign of terror. The painting is signed at the bottom mid left of the canvas and is set in a gilded wooden frame
So important is this work in the artist's recorded portfolio, that it was given full page treatment in a 1988 book titled Catalogue de l'exposition, Claude-Marie, Edouard et Guillaume Dubufe, Portraits d'un siècle d'élégance parisienne, authored by Emmanuel Bréon, p.?72. Refer to photographs.
