Michele Cortazzo 'Italy, 19th C.' Oil on Canvas, After Guercino's 1651 Samian Si

About the Item

Artist label in script with a Florence address on verso. Christies label on the stretcher. The original is in a private collection. A studio copy is also in the Uffizi Gallery Florence. Cortazzo (or Cortazzi) was known to copy old master paintings, perhaps this one after the copy in Florence. This painting is a variant of the original with the Sibyl in red and brown robes in 3/4 view seated at a table with her open book written in Latin (translation: Hail to thee, Chaste Sion, and Virgin who has suffered much). She was one of many classical sibyl profetesses. canvas 47 x 38 1/2" gilt frame 54 3/4 x 45 3/4" x 2.5”. Condition: two spot losses to the paint on the left black background, and on the right side above the robe (Please see detail photos), otherwise good with expected slight wear and finish loss to the frame with the painting displaying exceptionally well.
