"New Mexico Scene, " Large and Rare Landscape with Adobe Church

About the Item

In 1943, when the Second World War still raged a continent away, Eleanor Reed painted this beautiful and haunting view of the New Mexico landscape, featuring a rosy-toned adobe church in the distance and the skull of an animal in the foreground, with a group of turkey buzzards looking on from the branches of a tree. Although some of this painting's motifs -- including church and skull -- are familiar from the work of Georgia O'Keefe and other artists working in the Southwest, here Reed uses a uniquely rich array of deep colors for her painting, including greens, reds and purples, and the entire effect is otherworldly. The artist was born in Oklahoma, but trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; she retained her connection to Philadelphia, retaining a membership at the Philadelphia Art Alliance located on Rittenhouse Square.

    By Frank Applegate 1
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This superbly painted view of the mountains framing a river valley in northern New Mexico is attributed to Frank Guy Applegate, who lived and worked in the state during the 1920s, and is known for his watercolors -- such as this -- that present strong, abstracted views of the local landscapes, all in vivid colors and bold strokes of paint. Applegate was considered one of the New Mexico Modernists, and was accompanied on some of his painting forays by B.J.O. Nordfeldt, Andrew Dasburg and Josef Bakos. Applegate also had enormous respect for the culture and artistry of the native people, and encouraged a revival of the Pueblo style...
