Religious Portrait Painting Oil on Canvas of Catholic Nun in Habit Veil and Coif
About the Item
Oil on canvas portrait painting of a Catholic nun. This beautiful portrait of a woman is unframed and in wonderful vintage condition. The subject is of a Catholic sister, with black hair, dressed in her habit. A black veil with coif covers her head, with white lace detail peeking out and trailing down her front. The subject is giving a gentle smile and gazing at her left.
A round yellow or gold broach with a ruby gemstone and starburst gold detail is fastened to the front of her habit atop a white lace detail fabric.
The background is a dark brown and black mix. Painting is in oil on canvas and unframed and signed at the bottom left. Signature is illegible and at the bottom right corner.
How we would style it:
We are big fans of styling portrait paintings in groupings. Perhaps in an entryway styled going up the walls near a staircase. A guest bedroom completely covering every inch of the walls, a living room above a fireplace, alone in a powder bath, or in a kitchen resting on an open shelf. For collectors of portraits, this would make a fantastic addition.

Viewed in profile against a rich emerald green background, with just a hint of her plain face peeking out from under an enormous white cornette that dominates the top half of the painting. The crisp shape of the broad white collar on her habit provides a nice visual balance, and contrasts strikingly with the deep cobalt blue of her blouse that trails off into long, blood red-tinged drips. Interesting textures are on display throughout, provided by the artist’s varying brushstrokes, thickly applied paint, and the underlying board—which is likely plywood—upon which the work was done.
