About the Item
Hand-colored lemon botanical engravings attributed to Giovanni Battista Ferrari's "Hesperides, sive, De Malorum Aureorum culture etude Libri Quatuor." This was Giovanni's masterpiece publication of citrus published in Rome in 1646. It is considered to be one of most precise and decorative botanical works of 17th century Europe. Each copper plate print is protected by a hand-drawn and marbleized mat, glass and a silver gilt frame. Mat opening measures 8.25" W x 12.25" H. Framed: 16.5" W x 20.25" H.
Ferrari was born in Sienna in 1585 and entered the Jesuit Order in 1602. He became the Horitcultural Advisor to the Papal family and was appointed to manage the newly formed garden at the Barberini Palace in Rome. His book on citrus included many varieties of rare plants with detailed records of planting, training and housing the plants in orangeries.
