"Spirit of Atlantis and Serpent of Quetzalcoatl, " Rare Art Deco Print by Avinoff

About the Item

Extraordinarily sensuous and imaginative, this very rare signed print by Andrey Avinoff was one of several he created for "The Fall of Atlantis," a monumental and fantastical poem by George Golokhvastoff published in 1944. Each of Avinoff's images centered around a handsome, lithe nude male youth -- The Spirit of Atlantis -- shown here encircled by the plumed serpent of Quetzalcoatl. Atlantis' fate is symbolized by the submerged Ionic capital. The publication adds: "A spectral outline of a hand symbolizes the supreme fate which destroys the ancient island, the Spirit of which is bound to survive its physical destruction." Avinoff was born in Russia and played an important role in the Czar's government, but the Communist revolution prompted him to make a new home in America. He was an artist-scientist, directing the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, becoming known around the world for his knowledge of butterflies, and creating remarkable art such as this print. (Dimensions include matte and frame; image itself is 14 inches high by 10.5 inches wide.).
