Studio BBPR for Olivetti, 'Spazio' large shelving system, metal, plastic, Italy, 1960 This tremendous shelving unit is designed by Studio BBPR for Olivetti in 1960 as part of the 'Spazio' series. The design won the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1962. The desk of the 'Spazio' series is featured in MoMA permanent collection. It consists out of eleven columns in different widths, with a total width of 29.9 ft, with a variation of different storage facilities. Seven large cabinets are joined by four smaller one, a set of drawers and multiple shelves. The arrangement itself is adjustable to your own liking. The honesty of construction and industrial texture of the metal, makes this long wall-unit a truly unique piece to store and showcase your valued belongings. BBPR was an architectural partnership founded by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969). BBPR was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The partnership was founded in opposition to Fascism and they wanted to develop a style that had no references to contemporary politics. During WW II, Gianluigi Banfi died in the camps of the Nazi’s whereas the others were also severely defined by this era. They also strongly reacted against the International style by enriching their buildings with medieval references.
