Antique Square 16th Century Gold Brown Flemish Renaissance Tapestry Nobleman

About the Item

Tapestries were ubiquitous in the castles and churches of the late medieval and Renaissance eras. At a practical level, they provided a form of insulation and decoration that could be easily transported. In addition, the process of tapestry weaving, where every stitch is placed by hand, enabled the creation of complex figurative images on an enormous scale. This is an excellent example of 16th century Flemish Renaissance Tapestry. It exhibits incredible period details and is in excellent condition given its age. It measures 4.7 x 5 ft. Provenance: Christies East Auction House, New York, NY in winter 1996.
