"Algernon Sullivan Plaque, " Rare Bas Relief with Nude Figures by Jules Roine

About the Item

This rare and important relief sculpture honors Algernon Sydney Sullivan, one of the most admired and respected attorneys and civic leaders active in New York in the late 19th century. Born a Hoosier, he moved to New York by 1860, and though an ardent abolitionist, felt honor-bound to step forward to defend the sailors of the Confederate ship Savannah, captured by the Union early in the Civil War. He served in the public sector for a decade and fought the Tweed gang. Later, Sullivan created two of the more important and influential law firms in New York in his era -- one of them, Sullivan and Cromwell, continues today -- but he always remained supportive of the poor who could not afford to retain an attorney for legal assistance. In his honor, the Sullivan Fountain was erected in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and in 1925, the New York Southern Society commissioned Jules Roine to sculpt this award, given to outstanding students in Eastern universities who exhibited Sullivan's ideals of heart, mind, and conduct, informed by a spirit of helpfulness to others. This allegorical plaque includes a portrait of Sullivan to the left, and an idealized, semi-nude youth to the right holding the book of knowledge and the torch of wisdom.
